On July 14, I ‘said goodbye’ to Jay as I imagined the troopship he had been on 100 years earlier being pulled out of Bush Pier in Brooklyn, New York. Today, we’re in the village of Flirey where, about noon one hundred years ago today, he and the 301st Engineers arrived. Today it’s a quiet little place with a few shops, a tall church, a hotel where we will be spending the night. This is the new Flirey, built after the complete destruction of the original town during the war.
