As Jay did in 1918, one hundred years later I woke up in the town of Flirey. After years of shelling by the Germans the town was so devastated, it was rebuilt in a new location, just across the road from the original site. Much of the stone and rock from the destroyed buildings had been removed and used by engineers to rebuild local infrastructure. But today, 100 years later, I’m in Flirey. Here are photos of the rebuilt town including a new church and what’s left of the old church.
