September 13, 1918 – A devastated town

Flirey

One hundred years ago today, Unit A of the 301st Engineers awoke in the town of Flirey, France. It must have been a sleepless night; the front was only 5 kms away.   Here are photos of the what they saw of the town, or what was left of it after four years of bombardment. The 301st Engineers removed much of the rubble and used it to rebuild roads in and out of the town.
